This thing of ours by Cammy Franzese

How faith saved my mafia marriage... the subtitle automatically catches your interest, doesn't it? I literally could not put this book down, it was so interesting. I honestly could not believe that the author was so naive as to not see that the man she was having a whirlwind romance with (Michael Franzese - with whom would become her future husband) was tied to organized crime, despite many hints and obvious red flags. I suppose Cammy was too young and inexperienced to have the wisdom to discern she was marrying a mobster, and the book attests to this. The story is in essence the consequences that she had to live with by marrying someone attached to the mob, how she fell in love, lost him to the prison system, and had to raise their children by herself. The wonderful redemptive part of her story is that her husband eventually came to know the Lord, and she (the author) learned to fully and completely rely on God for everything - with eventually getting to life the latter part of their lives together. I really liked the book and loved how Cammy kept telling the reader that she made the choice (although unintelligent) to marry her husband, and because of her choice, she had to live with the consequences. Although there are no interesting facts about the mob or any organized crime stories relating to her or her husband, I think it's a great and interesting read, especially for those who have made poor relationship choices and would like to hear of a redemptive story. Awakening by Stovall Weems

Awakening: A New Approach to Faith, Fasting, and Spiritual Freedom by Stovall Weems is a book about the power of fasting, and is in essence a 21 day guide to revolutionize your relationship with God. The author speaks to the reader on how to get your spirit on fire for God (again) and how to get the zeal and craving for God back (if you have lost it). Stovall speaks on the power of prayer alongside of fasting, and how to ignite a passion in your walk by becoming in alignment with God. I loved his statement in the book about how "this will be your best year ever - if it is your best year spiritually", and he teaches the reader how to do this by the act of fasting and praying. In the back of the book, the author outlines 21 days of devotionals and tips on fasting during those days. Overall, I felt like the book had the right idea, but I really wanted more substance, i.e. amazing stories (to his credit the author does have true life testimonials that are sweet but basic) that would just bowl me over.. but didn't. The best part of the book was the part at the end that gives the reader devotionals and tips for fasting for a 21 day period. These devotionals are thought provoking and true to the theme in the book of drawing the reader closer to God. This would be a great book for a new Christian or someone who wants to learn about fasting and how to fast in a practical way. Seasoned Christians may find the book a little boring - but it definitely can be used as a teaching and learning tool as there is also a small group learning guide in the back of the book. Three Cups by Tony Townsley and Mark St. Germain

This is a wonderful childrens book teaching the concepts of saving, spending and giving. It is in an easy to read and understand format, and teaches children how and why they should save, spend, and give. It is shown in the story by parents giving their son three cups, and showing him how to divide his allowance into the three cups. The boy takes a trip to the bank, learns about interest, and growing his money. He also learns about the joy and excitement of saving up for a new toy that he wants to buy, and most importantly, he learns that by putting money into the giving cup he can help others. This book really is a great tool to teach children about money and Godly money management, and I would recommend it to any parent. I received this book from the publisher. Weeknights with Giada by Giada Laurentis

(this will be released March 27th) This is a wonderful cookbook for those who are always wondering: "What should I cook for dinner"? These recipes are all family friendly and seem to be fairly easy to put together. The recipes are not standard though - they are interesting and different.. giving the reader new ways to prepare food for their family. The book is broken down into soups and salads, bruschettas, sandwiches and pizzas, pastas and grains, meat, poultry and fish, breakfast for dinner (my favorite) veggies & sides, and desserts. She also has a section called "change of pace" that has lots of fun recipes like Spicy Mint Beef and Thai Turkey Lettuce Cups. There are lots and lots of great pictures, and each recipe has a small personal intro beforehand along with cook's notes with helpful hints and information. She has meat dishes, but also has vegetarian dishes, with a huge variety in between. I honestly could not wait to make the Chocolate Mascarpone Pound Cake recipe - her desserts are amazing! I read a lot of cookbooks, and I really loved this one. I loved the pictures that she put in the cookbook of her family, and I also loved that the recipes were healthy, family friendly, and flavorful but not too intricate to cause frustration. I would not recommend this to a beginner, but if you enjoy cooking and especially are looking for a robust cookbook to enhance your weeknight cooking, this is the cookbook for you! The Names of God Bible - Anne Spangler General Editor

This is a great Bible for those who want to have a deeper understanding of the Bible in relation to the specific Hebrew translation used for the name of God in each specific passage of scripture. For instance, instead of saying "God" this translation will use the specific meaning used and highlight it in brown such as "Yahweh Nissi" (Lord my banner) or "Magen" (Shield). There are wonderful introductions before each book and each key name used for God within the book being introduced is listed along with it's definition for greater understanding. Also within this Bible are two paged details of interest devotionals centered on the Hebrew descriptions of God, and promises within the Bible associated with each term. The reader comes away with a more in depth understanding of God and His nature and character and attributes. I recommend this Bible translation to anyone who is interested in learning more about the specific names of God and the meaning behind each one. I really like this translation and will use it often. Cook like a rock star by Anne Burrell

This is a fantastic cookbook for novice and experienced cooks alike! I loved this cookbook and the style that it was written in. Anne is very endearing and personable in this book, and she knows how to make the reader both interested and entertained! There are six segments in this book - Piccolini (her little nibbles), Firsts, Pasta, Seconds, Sides, and Desserts. Anne shares her favorite tools and her basic ingredient pantry (and why). She also gives a brief description of cooking terms in an easy to understand format. There are 125 recipes that are amazingly tasty, and I really enjoyed how Anne gave a brief introduction paragraph before every recipe. She gives the reader the prep work in advance to make the process and preparation easier, and the steps for each recipe are easy to follow and understand. There are numerous beautifully taken photographs, and Anne also inserts hand-written personal notes into some of the recipes. I love her Anne-isms like "super cinchy". I am very excited to try the truffled deviled eggs, Light-as-a-Cloud Gnocchi, braised baby artichokes, and lemon curd tart for my next dinner party! If you like Anne on the Food Network, and if you like cookbooks, this is a fun one! I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. When you don't see his plan by Nadine Hennesey and Rebecca Baker

This is a true life story based on the life of Nadine Hennesey. From the moment I started reading this book, I could not put it down! Nadine, a Christian, marries a very godly man, and after only 11 months of marriage (at the age of 26) the Lord took him home. Nadine was pregnant with their only child, and instantly became a young widow and soon-to-be single mom. She seeks the Lord's will for her life, and asks Him to use her. She then pursues the dream she shared with her deceased husband of international missions, and with her young daughter in tow, she bravely dives into serving others as a missionary and uses her credentials as a teacher to make a difference in the lives of the oppressed and needy in underdeveloped and war torn countries. Nadine and her daughter end up in Kosovo, and the stories she tells of her experiences there are heart renching, but also encouraging when she shares of the amazing things that God did and continues to do there. I deeply enjoyed reading this book and after reading it felt a deeper sense of compassion for missions work - and those that need to be ministered to. Everyone should read this book, especially if you have a heart for missions work and a heart to serve others.

Thank you, God, For blessing me by Max Lucado

This is a short, cute children's book by Max Lucado about a caterpillar, Hermes, thanking God. He thanks God for how God made him, for food, friends, family, creation, and even for playtime. I viewed this in ebook format so cannot comment on the quality of the book itself, but the illustrations are cute and seem age appropriate. I wish the book was a little longer, but it may be just long enough for a one to three year old.

A Sound Among the Trees

A Sound Among the Trees by Susan Meissner is a fictional tale about the women of a grand Sounthern estate named Holly Oak, connecting the women of the house in the past who lived during the Cival War Era, to the women of the house in present day. The story is based primarily upon the premise that the spirit of Susannah (who was believed to be disloyal to the confederate cause) needs absolution for her deeds, and she is taking it out on the women of future generations of Holly Oak. Adelaide, the current matriarch of Holly Oak, believes this to the fullest extent, and lives her life in the shadow of Susannah and Holly Oak, to the detriment of her family and herself. After Adelaide's granddaughter passes away who lived with her at Holly Oak, a new woman "Marielle" marries her grandson in law, and thus begins a new discovery of the house and the past memories who overshadow everyone's existence who lives or has lived there. This book does a great job of showing human nature's tendency to explain away things because of superstitition and misconceptions and also shows how exposing truth can change our perspectives and beliefs. I also enjoyed the Civil War history and how the author made it very interesting to the reader by using the characters and the location of the house to make it real. This is a fun read!

Heaven is for real for kids as told by Colton Burpo

I loved the book Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo, and so I was ecstatic to review Heaven is for Real for Kids as told by Colton Burpo. This kids book is so sweet and moving, just like the adult version. The book has sweet pictures and a brief statement on each page of what Colton saw while he was in Heaven, in a condensed version. Each page also has scriptures on it that coincide with the statements and pictures (that a child can understand). Colton's experience was so moving (in the adult version) and so I am so excited that the family decided to also express the experience in a way that children can understand. This book is very lovely and penned in a way that appeals to children, with a simple message. I recommend that you buy this book for your kids, or for child that you know. It will touch children, and also maybe the adults in their lives. The experience that happened to Colton Burpo is amazing, and I am so glad that God put it on their hearts to share it with the world. Inside Threat (A Riley Covington Thriller) by Jason Elam and Steve Yohn

Inside Threat is the last of four books in the Riley Covington Thriller series. Although I was sent this review copy without having read the previous novels in the series, I immensely enjoyed this book. The story centers around an all american football (and military hero) who is trying to navigate his way in the NFL after his high profile military career. The novel also centers on a few other main characters who have previously surrounded Riley and held a place in his life and especially one who still holds his heart. The book is an action packed suspense novel based around radical Islamists who are attempting to hold a national uprising "jihad" and end up doing it on Riley's turf and involve those he holds dear. This is an interesting read with details on Islam that were fascinating, taking place primarily in D.C. along with an ending that I did not expect. Without having read the previous novels to have an in depth understanding of the characters, I was still drawn into this story and really enjoyed it, and would recommend it.I received this book from the publisher. The Wonder of Your Love by Beth Wiseman

The Wonder of Your Love by Beth Wiseman is a fictional story about an Amish widow in modern day. The main character,Katie Anne, was betrayed by her husband who had an adulterous affair with a non-Amish woman, and then left her to live with this woman. Little did he know that Katie Anne was pregnant with their only child, but he did not live long enough to find out because he was killed in an accident. Another Amish man (also a widower) is introduced in the story, and thus begins an interesting adventure of friendship, discovery, and opening up of old wounds when new information develops regarding Katie Anne's husband's mistress and details of his end of life is revealed. This story was sweet and romantic -if a little predicable, but not too much. The characters are well developed and the story flows very well and keeps the reader hooked. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an interesting sweet fictional read about modern day Amish and the struggles that they face (just like everyone else). God and faith are intertwined throughout the story, and it is an overall uplifting encouraging book.

Ascent From Darkness by Michael Leehan

Ascent from Darkness is a gripping, intense true-story book about a man who was a satanist and then finally yielded to God and became a Christian. Michael Leehan candidly tells his story beginning from young adulthood and the events that took place in his life to propel him to the dark side and ultimaltely make the worst mistake of his life: to pledge allegiance to Satan and to follow demonic influences and everything that comes with it. The author gives an account of his life and all of the landmark decisions and happenings that defined his miserable and tormented existence. He details his interactions with demons, and how he was used powerfully to entice Christians to walk away from their faith. I absolutely could not put this book down because it was so riveting to read! It was amazing to hear his stories and almost unimaginable to think that the things he described and lived actually happened. It is amazing to me that this man by the grace of God is still alive today, and especially amazing that God loved him so much (even though he was a warrior against God for Satan) that He opened his eyes and softened his heart to receive Him. This book is a good read, but as a warning it is a little scary and will make you realize (if you didn't already) that we live in a spiritual realm that we cannot see. But, God is on the throne and his will will be done, as you will see in this book!

One Call Away by Brenda Warner

One call away: answering life's challenges with unshakable faith by Brenda Warner was an amazingly riveting read! Warner is the wife of ex-NFL superstar Kurt Warner, and her life story is truly remarkable! She is very candid in her personal story, and the reader is sucked in immediately with the first chapter detailing a horrific indcident that happened to her first born son (with an ex-husband). Incident after incident continues to reign down on this woman's life, but yet she persists and has a strong resolve to survive. Her life was extremely difficult before meeting and marrying Kurt Warner, and continued to be somewhat difficult, even though he was making millions of dollars and experiencing fame and the "good life". Although the author really didn't seem to have a rock solid perception of the Bible and scripture was not really intertwined within the book, I think that this book has a great message of hope and survival and redemption. I literally could not put this book down because I could not believe everything that Brenda had to go through! This book brings reality to the perception that celebrities have (and have had) it easy and shows that life is not perfect for anyone.

Grace for the good girl: Letting go of the try hard life

Grace for the good girl, written by Emily Freeman, is a book for Christian women who feel like they have to have it together..all of the time. This book is for those who hide behind a mask of diligence in service, in accomplishments, in how others perceive you, and those who find satisfaction in pefection (instead of being realistic and relying on God's grace). The author candidly speaks about her personal walk through the facade of "perfection", and how that played out in her life. She spends a lot of time lamenting her lack of having an amazing testimony due to the fact that she was not the "bad girl" who came back from a life of wild sin to redemption, and that her story seemed boring to her. She parallels the story of the prodigal son to the character of the good brother and how she could relate to the good brother being upset that the prodigal was rewarded for returning from a rampage of bad behavior. Ultimately though, Emily brings the reader to the understanding of God's grace in our lives, the reality that living under an expectation of personal perfection is sin (and impossible to achieve anyway) and that it is better to be real, sometimes fail, and rely on God instead of self. There is also a study guide in the back of the book which would be great for personal or group discussions. I liked this book, although is was personally a little hard to relate to her anguish because I was not the pefect teenageer or young adult and by no means have ever strived for perfection!

Lioness Arising: Wake up and change your world by Lisa Bevere

I was so excited to review this book because I heard Lisa speak at a conference on this very topic a few months back. This book is based on the premise that women in the church now are "asleep" so to speak - not fully awake in our capabilities, powers to influence the world and make a true difference, and in many other areas. She jokes that we are all just waiting for the rapture to happen and aren't pursuing causes or endeavors that will truly make a difference, but just quietly going about our day to day making no impact (besides those immediately around us). She uses her life story as an introvert stay at home mom who was afraid to talk to anyone. She then describes a vision that God gave her to "wake her up", which in turn caused her to grow and become on fire for fighting for the rights of women and the oppressed. She uses the lioness as her main focus and the tendencies of the pride they belong to and parallels it to the way God can use women on this earth. Lisa interweaves scripture throughout her book and inspires the reader to make a positive change now! She is easily relatable and rouses the reader to action with her God-inspired words. I loved this book and honestly every women should read it, unless you are too scared it will make you want to change! (Because it will)!

Don't check your brains at the door by by Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler

This is a great book geared more for the teen audience that gives answers to questions that teens may have and provides solid information on the "whys" of the beliefs of Christianity in an easy to understand format. The chapters grouped in sections such as, "Myths about God", "Myths about Jesus", "Myths about the Bible", and "Myths about Life and Happiness". Each mini-topic is only two to three pages long, and ends with a list of "Brain Food" for the reader to digest which includes scripture references and questions to tie in the topic addressed. I thought that the authors did a great job of including most of the topics that young adults and teenagers may have questions about regarding their faith, and each topic was presented in a interesting and fun to read format. I especially appreciated that they put scripture references at the end of each passage to confirm in the reader that they are indeed basing the information off of scripture. I would recommend this book to any parent of an 11-18 year old to read together or separate as a tool to strenghthen a child's beliefs and faith. It would also be a great book for a group bible study!

A Confident Heart by Renee Swope

A Confident Heart (How to stop doubting yourself and live in the security of God's promises)is a faith building, life changing, encouraging read. The author, Renee Swope, shares with the reader her life history and experiences regarding doubt, worry, and insecurity. It is so easy to relate to Renee because she is so transparent and real in expressing her transformation from being insecure and unfulfilled in who she was (in Christ) to becoming a confident, secure woman who
can stand in the truth and promises of God and his Word without doubting - and freeing herself from the lies of Satan. The author uses God's word throughout the book to convict, correct, and encourage a healthy perspective of self and self-worth. Many of the chapters were very eye opening for me in helping to reveal areas in my spiritual walk that may need adjustment that I previously have not contemplated. I was very impressed with the writing style in this book and was engaged throughout, gleaning something that I could contemplate and meditate on in every chapter. I recommend that every woman read this well-written book, even if you don't think you have a confidence or self-worth issue.

The Juice Lady's Living Foods Revolution

This was an amazing book! The author, Cherie Calbom, is so personable and begins with her true life story of a traumatic event that happened to her, and the changes that the end result of this event caused her to she make in her lifestyle and diet. She speaks about God in a relevant and applicable way throughout the book, and gives great insight into food consumption, our bodies, and general food lifestyle habits. She has great information, facts, and statistics, including that only 26% of adults are getting over three servings of fruits or vegetables a day! The chapters are informative but not boring. She touches on why we should juice for our vegetable/fruit consumption, why it helps an individual lose weight and the effects it has on each body system, how to detox, and also includes a diet plan and full color recipes for juices, smoothies, and main dishes. After reading this book I was painfully aware of my shortcomings in consuming enough fruits and vegetables. The statistics were mind blowing and sobering. I honestly immediately went online to an auction site and purchased an industrial juicer. The book has triggered a positive change for myself and my family, and although hesitant at first, I am very glad I took the time to read this book, and I think you should read it too!I received this book from the publisher. When the hurt runs deep by Kay Arthur

Kay Aurthur is a well respected author with many biblically sound books under her belt. This book is about life's deep hurts, pain, and suffering, and how to work through these life changing events with God and a sound knowledge of his character and the Bible and why He allows these things to happen in our lives. Kay uses her life experiences, along with numerous examples from other people's lives to show that everyone at some point will experience a deep hurt (in which she explains that God uses these experiences for good and growth). Each chapeter in the book is rooted in God's word and each topic is thouroughly studied along with scripture. Chapters such as "It wasn't supposed to be that way", "God's answer to our "why"?" and "Will the hurt every go away?" touch on every subject related to pain and suffering. I don't think I would give this to someone who has JUST experieced trauma or a deep hurt because it seems more geared toward someone who is ready and on the path to process the painful experience and move forward toward healing. This book had some great points and was a good book, although a seasoned Christian may find it a little repetetive and may not benefit as much as a newer unseasoned Christian. This book also has a study guide in the back for leading a bible study centered around the book, which would be a fantastic tool for a small group leader. I received this book from the publisher. Organized Simplicity: The Clutter Free Approach to Intentional Living

One of my friends was reading this, and I was intrigued. The author and her family decided they wanted to live overseas, and so they downsized dramatically, and live very simply so that they (the parents) can spend lots of quality time with their children and not be in bondage to things or acquiring things. She sets out a plan for simplistic living, along with advice on how to schedule your home, cleaning jobs (including how to purge and DEEP clean every room of your house) and how to do this in a way pleasing to God and his purpose. She is very organically bent, which I love, and gives home-made recipes in the back of the book for cleaning supplies and bath/body care. She teaches that you can have balance in career, family, home, etc. with daily planning and purpose. I LOVED this little book and I would recommend it to anyone, male or female. This book outlines in a simplistic manner step by step how to create order. I seriously wish more people would read this book as I am a real estate agent and see lots of homes that need some serious help in the home management department!Buy this book for yourself and a friend, you will be glad you did!

A Place Called Blessing: Where hurting ends and love begins

This story is a fictional follow up to John Trent's "The Blessing", to help enable the reader to understand how the information in "The Blessing" can be implemented in another's life. The story is based upon the sad life of Josh, who from the beginning suffers from parental neglect, and must be placed in foster care with his brothers, and then experiences extreme tragedy when he inadvertantly causes a death from a fire he sets. He then loses all hope, and suffers through life to adulthood. Then, by God's providence, he lands in an environment where he begins to experience The Blessing from those who are closest to him. By living the principles outlined in John Trent's original book "The Blessing", those surrounding Josh (along with God's divine purpose) change Josh's heart and he is transformed. I loved this book, and it was an enjoyable quick read, and a reminder to me that life can be really really tough, but God can change lives and hearts. I received this book from the publisher. Life, in spite of me by Kristen J. Anderson

This is an amazing inspiring story about a seventeen year old girl struggling with depression, who made a decision to lay down on her neighborhood railroad tracks to end her life. Amazingly, God spared her life, but she lost her legs. From the very first chapter, the reader feels extreme empathy for the author, Kristen, as she recounts the horrific events surrounding her suicide attempt. Kristen should have died that night, but God had other plans. She brings the reader along in recounting her journey toward hope and healing, and ultimately ending with her salvation and the amazing life God had planned for her. My heart broke for this young woman, and through her story, I felt a deeper understanding for those who struggle with depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies. I absolutely loved this book. I was inspired and moved by this story, and feel that anyone who has a relationship with someone who struggles with depression or has teens in the home who may become depressed due to the world we live in should read this book! It is also an eye opener for someone who would like a greater understanding in ministering to others. This book will tug at your heart and increase your compassion, I challenge you to read it! Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado

Cure for the Common Life is a book geared toward those who are struggling with their position in life, and/or those who are unhappy in their current profession (or lack of). Lucado states the obvious: unless your last name is Hilton or Gates, men and women must work. His suggestion is to find your "sweet spot" or the place where you, your talents, and God all intersect to create the highest potential of personal fulfillment. Lucado brings in many examples to show how some people are not using their strengths for maximum success, but allowing the world to dictate who we are and what we should be doing. God uniquely creates each individual for His ultimate purpose, and the author suggests that we as individuals need to diligently seek out what it is that we should be doing - and not doing something for glory, greed, position, etc. - but also not falling into the trap of not doing anything at all. Some suggestions included changing your attitude to that of a servant, playing up to your strengths, and daily taking away the focus on what you can do on your own, but what you can do for God. I thought that he was very helpful in guiding the reader to a better understanding toward work and personal strengths. I did not necessarily learn anything new, but this would be a great book for someone just starting out in the self-help book arena who is searching for some answers toward work and personal fulfillment with a Christian perspective. The Blessing By John Trent and Gary Smalley

The Blessing, Giving the Gift of Unconditional Love and Acceptance is a great book for anyone in any kind of relationship, but especially beneficial in the parent/child relationship. The premise of the book surrounds itself around the biblical Jacob and Esau story, with only one brother receiving a blessing from his father, and how important a parent's blessing is in a child's life. The authors do an amazing job with bringing in real life stories of people who didn't experience a "blessing" from one or both of their parents, and the tremendous negative effects this had on their lives. The authors teach that there are five elements in blessing others: 1. Meaningful Touch 2. A Spoken (or written) Message 3. Attaching High Value 4. Picturing a Special Future 5. An Active Commitment. These things must all be done to create a thriving environment for a child - with lasting lifelong results. The authors also touch on families that miss out on these opportunites and what can be done in those instances, along with practical steps to implement a blessing in a relationship. I have read the five love languages and thought this might be similiar, but it was different and a very eye opening read. I am definately going to implement their thoughts and suggestions in my relationships, with great expectations of a positive outcome. I think this book should be read by all. Jesus, My Father, The CIA and Me by Ian Morgan Cron

I initially thought this book would be very suspenseful, dramatic, and full of twists because of the title. But, after finishing the first chapter, I realized this book was not about the CIA, but about a man reflecting back upon his childhood trying to make sense of a broken, dysfunctional family living with an alcoholic father (who happened to work on and off for the CIA). The author (Ian) goes back to his youth and immerses the reader in the trauma of a child desperately trying to seek approval, affection, and acceptance from his alcoholic father - which he never gets. Ian recounts many boyhood instances of struggle and survival, all the while struggling with his relationship with God and not understanding God's character. The author spirals into the pit of depression, anxiety, drugs, and alcoholism himself, until coming to terms with his father's issues, and resolving his relationship with God. I felt extreme empathy for this individual, and felt somewhat more understanding toward the alcoholism family dynamic. Although this book was not what I thought it was going to be, it ended up being an interesting read. I received this e-book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. Love and War by John and Stasi Eldredge

John and Stasi Eldredge have been married for over twenty five years, and know without a doubt, that marriage is difficult. The premise of this book is that marriage can be wonderful, but also is "fabulously hard". By using their real life experiences, John and Stasi both contribute wisdom in this book by sharing how God (and the Enemy) has worked in their marriage. They candidly share their faults and sin issues that led to deep hurts and struggles in their marriage. They bring biblical truths in showing what God purposes for marriage (not your personal happiness!)to bring reality to the reader. It is sobering to realize through the chapters how much work marriage really is and how much continual effort is involved for the LONG HAUL. They do cite that although many marriages do stay together, they are loveless and lifeless. As they have done in their other books, I enjoy their life perspective that this journey is an adventure, one to be lived with a courageous and adventurous heart. Since I have personally experienced the negative side of marriage from a past divorce and also am experiencing a marriage that is full of life, I felt that their input was spot on. I love all of their books, and recommend all of them.I received this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. Money Secrets of the Amish by Lorilee Craker

Lately I have become interested in the Amish people therefore was very interested in reading this e-book. The author spent time interviewing families in an Amish community to try to learn why the Amish prosper, even during a down economy. Throughout the book the author compares her lack of budgeting, not enough savings, and high consumerism ethic to that of the Amish - who recycle, use an item to the hilt, and make do or do without. The author touches on topics including waiting for something you want, paying on time, making your own gifts, saving (10-20% of your monthly income), recycling, living debt free, and making your food from scratch (along with buying in bulk and organic at local farms or farmers markets). I thought is was really neat that within the e-book I was able to click on the web resources and was taken directly to the websites mentioned. I also really enjoyed how candid the author was in her admissions of her (lack of) budgeting skills and her enthusiasm for change toward the Amish model (to a point). I especially liked how reflective she was in how her children were being trained to always want more and in excess, instead of being content with what they had. I was personally encouraged by all of the suggestions because our family already does most if not all of the tidbits, or "secrets" she learned from the Amish people - although I don't think they are necessarily secrets, just common sense practical ways to thrive with the money you have earned and want to save. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to change their way of thinking less toward consumerism. After all, because of the U.S. Recession, saving money and being frugal and resourceful is cool - FINALLY!

The Waiting Place by Eileen Button

The Waiting Place, Learning to Appreicate Life's Little Delays was such a wonderful read! This book is more than a devotional, it is a a collection of personal essays by the author using her real life experiences to show the reader that amazing things can happen in the places in life where we are forced to wait. It is immediately easy to identify with the author as her essays are honest and relatable. She laments that sometimes in life we think, "this is so not the life I thought I'd have", but then she shows the reader through her own life where God has met her in those places. In the waiting place she is shown that by waiting on what she wants now or what she wants to be finished with or what she THINKS life should be like, she may be missing out on what God has for her. She shows the reader by her stories to treasure life right now, and the people and relationships of the moment, the way they are now, not the way you think they should be or want them to be. I loved how candid the author was, and I loved reading every page in this book. This book really touched my heart, and reminded me to wait, watch, remember, and LIVE! I highly recommend this book!

The Seraph Seal by Leonard Sweet & Lori Wagner

The Seraph Seal is a very fast paced, action packed book similiar to The DaVinci Code or National Treasure. The story is centered around end of times events in the year 2048, with the main character, Paul, discovering symbols and clues to enable using the four horseman of The Bible's book of Revelation as a way to escape the dying planet Earth and begin life in another world or dimension. This book was very complex, detailed, and sometimes very hard to follow and confusing(until I discovered in the back of the book a list of characters and more detailed notes). The authors obviously are very educated in historical research and spent a lot of time detailing objects and symbols in the book. Although the story was interesting, I felt uneasy throughout the book because of the unbiblical statements and references made, including constant dialouge about God's saving love and love is all you need etc. without mentioning the son of God or saving grace through the cross along with it. The main theme was that certain people had the capability to save and can determine the future based on choices and being in the right place at the right time, which does not have any Biblical authenticity. If you have a high tolerence for complex reading and can tolerate some confusion, then you may like this book.

Praying for Your Future Husband by Robin Jones Gunn & Tricia Goyer

This book is a gem for a single woman to learn HOW to pray and WHAT to pray for in a future husband. The book's two authors, Robin and Tricia, share their real life, and love stories in each chapter that are relatable and inspiring. Tricia and Robin each share their failures, heartbreaks, and happy endings. Each chapter also includes scriptures, quotes, and real stories from other women who prayed for their future husbands and saw real results, along with discussion questions at the end of each chapter to encourage deeper thought into each subject presented. The subtitle,"Preparing your heart for his" is the theme of this book, showing the reader that through prayer and praying for other people (your future husband), you will in turn become closer to God and grow in knowing HIM. Specific items are discussed and listed for the reader to pray for, including attributes to look for in a future husband. Single women are encouraged to have faith and patience, be in prayer, and wait for what God has in store for you. This book has an enticing cover, and is easy and enjoyable to read. My twelve year old daughter also enjoyed the book, as it was appropriate for her to read too. This is a must read for any single woman, as you are never too young or too old to start praying from your heart for your future husband.

The Promise of An Angel by Ruth Reid

This book is the first novel in the Heaven on Earth series. The setting takes place in an Amish (old-order) settlement in Michigan. The main character, Judith, is a nineteen year old Amish girl, strong in her beliefs, who is anxiously waiting to fulfill her destiny as an Amish woman by marrying and having children. She already has her hopes set on a man named Levi, and is completely enamored with him. The story begins with a barn raising event that ends in tragedy when Judith's younger brother has an accident which causes bodily harm. Judith is first on the scene, and witnesses a stranger over her brother who speaks a prophetic message to Judith. The man quickly disappears, and Judith is left with a story that no believes, including the man of her dreams, Levi. Tension begins building in the community and with Levi as Judith clings to her story, fueled by multiple encounters with the stranger, whom Judith quickly realizes is an Angel sent from God. During this time, Judith is be-friended by the community Bishop's son, who although warned by his father not to see Judith, intercedes for her and begins to woo her with his companionship and and his belief in her story. Judith struggles with losing everything as she holds fast to her faith in the promises from the Angel, while battling the rejection of her people. This book interweaves relationship and community tensions and struggles with forgiveness and standing strong in faith when everyone is against you. This book was a great read, and although I am not usually a fiction book reader, I look forward to the next book in this series!

Put Your Dream to the Test by John C. Maxwell

John C. Maxwell's book is for anyone who has a dream but lacks the tools, mental clarity, and focus necessary to move from dream to reality. The book starts with the premise that the reader already has a dream that has not come to fruition. The author uses a series of ten questions that he feels are imperative to attain success, along with stories of other individuals who have attained their dreams, while interweaving motivational tidbits to move the reader toward a greater probability of success. The reader is encouraged to reflect on each question and honestly evaluate what action needs to be taken in order to promote a greater success rate toward the overall dream. Each chapter is very thorough and detailed, and while very informative and highly accurate in each statement made, the length of each chapter can become a bit tedious if you are a little ADD like myself. It is definately a book that you can read, absorb, and come back to many times over.

The Chocolate Diaries by Karen Scalf Linamen

If you are looking for a light hearted, fun and humorous girlie read, with lots of practical advice, this book is for you! The author interweaves her life experiences with her love of chocolate, mixed with encouraging stories of other women overcoming life's obstacles. This book is highly entertaining, and the author immediately draws you in with stories of her daily struggles as a divorced, single working mom trying to navigate (hilariously) through life. Each chapter ends with a recipe for making something chocolate, and I am looking forward to making the Chocolate Cherry Cake on page 121. I also loved the engaging statements that were at the beginning of each chapter that created excitement for the upcoming stories that would be presented. Most women (and men) cannot help but love, "Every morning, put eating chocolate at the top of your to-do list. That way, you'll always get one thing done." This book put a smile on my face AND in my heart, and after reading it I wondered why I have not been reading more books like it! This book would also be a fabulous gift for a woman who is going through a trial and needs a pick-me-up!

Jolt! Get the Jump on a World That's Constantly Changing by Phil Cooke

In this book, the author, Phil Cooke, identifies a "Jolt" as a shock, a change, or a disturbance that shakes things up. This book offers practical solutions by topic and shows how to navigate through the complex and ever-changing world we live in, while realizing the ever-presence of God in our lives. The author's challenges aren't for those who are satisfied with mediocrity, or those who are unwilling to change their current thought processes. This book is for those who want to start to change for the better, and finish well. Negative perceptions and distractions are identified, and strategies for positive growth are discussed. The author encourages the reader to examine your life, enjoy the process, and become an influencer if you are not already one. The chapters in this book are easy to follow, fun to read, and contain just enough information to "be the chess player, not the chess piece." I enjoyed this book, and I think anyone that likes a motivational or self-help book will also enjoy it.

God Gave Us Two by Lisa Tawn Bergren

I was so excited to review this book! This children's book is applicable to our family as I am expecting another baby. The book did not disappoint! It is a beautiful hardback with engaging illustrations. In the book, the author speaks to young children about the questions, fears, and insecurities that are associated with their parents bringing a new baby into the home. The mother bear lovingly answers legitimate questions from her "Little Cub", including "If we don't like the new baby, can we send it back?" and others like it to encourage the child to focus on the positive aspects of having another sibling. The parents in the story also interweave God into their answers by reminding the little cub that God gave the little cub to them, as God has also given the family the new baby. I liked the book very much and would recommend it to anyone who is adding another sibling to the home. This would also be a great gift for a baby shower!

Heaven is for Real by Todd Burpo

This book was intended for my oldest daughter to read first, but I grabbed it when I went on vacation to Maui and was pleased with another great read! The book's author, Todd Burpo recounts the events that took place years ago when his (then) three year old son Colton experienced a medical event that caused him to have an out of body (or vision) experience of Heaven. After the trauma of the medical experience dies down, the author's son slowly starts disclosing to his family descriptive details of Heaven, including family members deceased that previously he had never met, and an unborn sister that he had never known had even existed. The author repeatedly tested his son with questions based on biblical truths that he knew his son in his limited life-time would not logically know the answers to. Colton amazingly knew the answers to all of the questions based on his experience, including what side of the throne of God Jesus sat on, that John the Baptist was his cousin, and that there was going to be a great battle at the end of the age and saw that Satan would be thrown in the lake of fire. This book and the descriptive details of Colton's experience were captivating to me. After just reading a book about Hell, I was so refreshed to read about a child's excitement about Heaven and that "Heaven is for Real". This book is worth reading, not only for adults, but also to older children.

23 Minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese

I had heard about this man a few years ago on an audio CD, and was instantly captivated by his story of having an out of body experience (or a very real vision) of experiencing Hell first hand for 23 minutes. The author paints a vivid and descriptive image of Hell and what happens to those imprisoned there. From the very first chapter, I instantly felt that the author was being truthful with his testimony of what he experienced, and felt his humility and gentleness through the pages, even though he was describing immense horrors. As a Christian, I was riveted and captivated with the book. The book confirmed in my mind what I believed that Hell would be like, along with adding details that intruiged and terrified me. What I absolutely loved about this book was that the author concluded each chapter with biblical and theological references for the reader to "check up" on and make sure his statements were actually biblical (which they were). I had to finish this book in a day because honestly, it was THAT GOOD. I would recommend this book to anyone, Christians and non-Christians alike. This book is thought provoking to say the least. I even read it to my children, and it was just as enticing to them as it was to me. This book is a MUST READ.
